 "SB-900 Initial observations" 2009-12-23
By Thomas R. Sweet (Tampa, FL USA)
I've been using my new SB-900 with a Nikon D3S and have great results. I previously used an SB-800 and liked that unit very much. I had not heard anything about the thermal cutoff until reading a couple of reviews on Amazon, so I gave my unit a test. I could not duplicate any cutoff problem. I use it as delivered and did not turn off any thermal protection. I fired it multiple times and it recycled very quickly and never hesitated. The recycle time is faster than my SB-800 with the extra battery add-on.

"THE benchmark in ease of use, expandability, and system integration!" 2009-12-16
By S. S. Malhotra (Norwalk, CT)
Great flash, and my second entry into the Nikon CLS system.

I needed something to work wirelessly with my D200 using the commander mode (remember to also purchase the Nikon SG-31R IR Panel for Built-in Flash Repl - Nikon 4905 to mount over your built in flash so you can wirelessly trigger the remote flash), something with a bit reach, and FAST recharge time.

For a naive user, the SB900's menus are a GOD sent - easy, quick, intuitive, the way it should've been.

There is some buzz on the web that early adopters had flashes that overheated and would shut down during events. . .how to combat the problem? Use Sanyo Eneloop 4 Pack AA NiMH Pre-Charged Rechargable Batteries w/ Charger, or get the battery pack for the SB900, which attaches with a wire and reduces recharge time and disperses heat better.

I personally have never had a problem with my SB900 recycling fast and overheating.

Looking forward to Nikon updating the SB600 with this user interface!

Worth buying.

I recently used for a big Weeding with a Nikon D300, worked well but after 50 pictures in a full mode got overheated and the automatic function turned off the flash, I will recomend a back up flash for special ocasions. I used with regular AA batteries lasted about 200 pictures. The motor is quiet and very useful when tele is used. Size wise is some what big and heavy, coverage is great.

Pricy as all Nikon product but well made.

 "Themal Shutdown yet again" 2009-12-02
By R. Adams (Paradise Valley, AZ)
Before I bought this flash, it seems most reviews were about thermal shutdown. Well, I've now owned my SB-900 for roughly 6 months and here is yet another take on the issue.

"Thermal Shutdown" is an alarm system built into the SB-900 to shut the flash down from further use. It happens when it is too hot and is shut down for a few minutes.

I shoot car auctions and car museums. I have spent days and days with this flash and love it. Yes, I have had it shut down on me several times over the last months. The first time it happened, it was a total panic. I thought the naysayers were right and the flash was a dud. Well looking back, all my thermal shutdowns have all happened when I really pushed the flash in a rush. It has since become easy to gauge how hot the flash is getting and how close I am getting to the shutdown point other than looking at the thermostat. (yes, there is a thermostat btw on the flash).

The thernal shutdown serves a purpose on this flash and it is easy to live with.

 "Opteka EN-EL3E Won't Work In New Nikon D90" 2009-12-23
By S. Kaplan (Marin County, CA, USA)
Purchased the Opteka EN-EL3E for my new Nikon D90. Charged it in the Nikon charger and even though the charger shows it charged the D90 shows it is not so battery will not work in D90. Contacted 47st Photo with two emails asking to return for replacement and they do not answer. Save your money and your time and buy a genuine Nikon battery, at least their support people answer you!

Save yourself some trouble and buy the real Nikon battery. The new EN-EL3e is an improved battery from it's predecessor. I purchased this Opteka for my D90 and it DID NOT recognize it. If I were you I would not risk it. It was cheap enough for me to try, but not worth the money or RISK of you do try it on your Nikon and something goes wrong so I am returning it to Amazon. From now on, I play no games an only buy Nikon original stuff. Amazon has a very good price on the Nikon branded battery. You pay for what you get, in this case I got nothing though ;-)

 "Not reliable" 2009-12-16
By David E. Turner (Hollywood, MD)
I have been using this product for 3 months. First couple days of use camera began to display low battery indicator earlier than expected. I installed another spare and continued. This went on a few times before I recieved a low battery indicator after fully charging it. I removed the battery and reinstalled and this went away. Now every time I use it and recieve a premature low battery indicator I just remove the battery and reinsert it and it clears. This hasn't hurt me yet but I know a disappointment will be lingering in the future when I miss a shot because of an invalid low battery indicator. Sometimes it happens after 5 shots sometimes after 50 but never has it actually been low. I suppose for some reason the contacts aren't making up completely. I am using original nikon batteries from now on.

After purchasing this spare replacement battery (Opteka EN-EL3e)for my D90, I found that it could not be charged by Nikon Charger.

When I asked Nikon custom service, they said D90 does not support 3rd party battery. I am still waiting for the firm reply from the vendor after 2 weeks time of purchase. The reply from the vendor seems a little bit slow. May be I need to return it for refund later?

I have had two of these go from working to DOA and the charger not even recognize there is a battery in it. I called Nikon and was told by a very rude customer service person that Nikon offers no warranty at all on their batteries. One of these batteries had been charged three times and the other 10 times at most. Don't waste your money on the Nikon brand. I have had good luck with the CTA brand replacement and it costs 20% of what the Nikon brand does.

Not sure how much you can say here... It's a Nikon battery. I've bought off-brand batteries before and had bad luck. So, I won't do that again. Bought this one as a backup for my D5000. A backup battery, in my mind, is a must have item. I can't tell you how many times I've been taking photos and found the battery to be running low. With a backup, you just swap batteries and keep shooting. Got it fast, in good condition, free shipping and at a much better price than in store.

 "D300s Medium Range Prosumer" 2009-12-20
By K. Morse (Statesboro, GA)
this review is for the average person wanting to upgrade from the D40/D5000

With it's magnesium alloy inner body and rubber sealed buttons, this camera is an excellent piece of equipment for wildlife photography when paired wig the correct lens.

It is well constructed in the areas that it needs to be strong but quite honesly there are some places on the camera tha have been reduced in quality to cut costs such as the switches, buttons, or the flash release. Those components are higher quality on the D90 to be honest wh you.

Speaking of the D90, this camera has the exact same sensor as the D90. I lke to think of the D300s as a D90 with features and processing from the D3. This camera can shoot 720p motion JPEG based AVI video from a Live View mode activated by a dedicated button. This camera does have a 51 point auto focus system and color 1005 pixel light metering.

Now the ugly truth. If you put this camera next to a D90 in the same conditions, the D90 will out perform this camera in low light. If the D300s is used past ISO 3200 it produces the most horrid smuged and noisy pictures I have seen. The D90 with all of it's "auto help the novice processing" will help you out and rescue your photos the best it can. The D300s is a professional APS-C camera which means it won't help you out like that. You absolutly cannot take pictures in inadequate light without the proper equipment.

I would go with the D90 if you want a decent camera that will produce sharp pictures without all of the fuss. With the money you save you can get the AF-S 18-200 VRI. That comes in the D300s kit. If you must absolutly have the pro features such as wired remotes, flash box control, and so on go with the D300s.

 "Nikon D300s 12MP" 2009-12-19
By R. Frew (United States)
After much research I moved from a Nikon D70s to the D300s. I was very happy with the D70s however I needed a larger pixel count for the large prints I prefer to make (13x19"+). I agree with many pro's that have advised that you don't need more than 8MP if you are producing 8x10's or even 11x14 full frame in most cases. If you go beyond that print size or crop severely for 11x14's, then a larger pixel count is where you need to be.

The D300s has been a perfect camera for me. I certainly put it in the prosumer category. It should not be your first camera. If you shoot mostly Auto or like to point and shoot, the D300s is not for you even if you have the money. It is very full-featured/complex camera and to get good pictures and your money's worth you need to be willing to invest the time to learn its many modes and capabilities. It is capable of shooting great pictures in very low light or in fast moving scenes with its wide ISO range, very low noise and advanced focus system. The ergonomics feel just right to me unlike many Canons I have tried. It has good balance and a very solid feel (metal frame). I shoot often with a Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 VR that is heavy and a good grip and balance is important for me.

I have found the color and resolution to be superb. I easily get professional (saleable) 13 x19" prints working through Lightroom 2.5 and Photoshop CS4 to a Canon Pro 9000 MkII printer. The D300s' many focus, white balance and color modes are a great help in a rapidly changing shoot. I have programmed several custom settings for both studio and outdoor work. Its great to be able to shift multiple camera settings with one button push. The "Info" button alone should keep you from buying the D300 vs D300s.

The dual memory card setup is also great. I switch between using the second card as a backup for important shoots to using it in overflow mode when I'm out for a long shoot. I shoot RAW most of the time and the safety of the overflow mode keeps me in the shooting flow so I don't have to stop, lose the mood and change memory cards. I often add a power grip when I'm using multi-Speedlight set-ups with a remote commander. The Nikon Remote Commander can draw down the main battery over the course of a long studio shoot. Otherwise the battery will easily do a full day and hundreds of shots. The Info button instantly shows you battery condition as a % in both the main and power grip. Nice upgrade so you don't have to look at a little battery icon and guess.

I am very happy with the D300s and highly recommend it if you are looking for a solid, pro-level camera. It has performed flawlessly for me. Amazon (B&H Photo) remains perfect for me with great price and on time delivery.

"Nikon D300s: a great camera (but you need to read the manual)" 2009-12-17
By Mateo
I have been using this camera for a couple of weeks and taken about 5000 exposures. This camera is great; however, it took me a little while to figure out the autofocus (AF) system. I switched from Canon because I truly do not like the size of their files (18MP is way beyond what I need). I like shooting when the subjects are in motion--not necessarily action--and learning how to focus properly is crucial for me. After reading the manual and playing around with the AF, I feel much better with the D300S. I am not new to photography--started with Minolta SLRs and then moved to Canon dSLRs--but I can safely say that the D300S has allowed me to take my best shots. I am still a bit reluctant to use the 6400 ISO, but the 3200 ISO works fine.

This camera is not for beginners. If you are not familiar with photography lingo, reading the manual would be frustrating. Moreover, the Program Mode is not the greatest. The video feature is dandy, but you have to keep the camera still. I have used the video feature a couple of times, and the image quality is fine as long as you use a tripod and don't move the camera too much. In my opinion, the video recorded with this camera needs a lot of editing, and I don't really have much practice editing videos.

In sum, this camera is a great buy for those who enjoy taking the time to take pictures. I would not recommend this to a first-time dSLR buyer, an inexperienced/casual photographer, or someone who wants to shoot video.

"Nice improvements over my D300" 2009-12-16
By Charles D. Mason (Nokomis, Florida)
I upgraded from a Nikon D300 to the D300S mainly for the video capability. The video produced is not super HD quality, but I didn't expect that. The video is actually quite good especially if you use a tripod and it allows me to travel without a dedicated video camera. The other improvements have proved to be fun and useful. I like the new door over the data cards, easier to use that the D300 lever. The new location of the live view button is very convenient, the extra frame per second is useful and the focusing and image quality seem marginally beter than the D300. The rocker switch on the back has tactile feedback which is better. All in all I am very happy to have upgraded. The service from Amazon was fabulous. I ordered the camera on Sunday, it was shipped (free of charge) on Monday and I had it in my hand a couple of days later. After I ordered on Sunday the price dropped $75.00 on Monday. I called customer service on Monday and they agreed to credit my VISA account with the $75.00 difference. You can't beat that! cm

"Great Camera but AF weakness" 2009-12-15
By Anthony Loh (NY, USA)
I am a relatively advance hobbyist, and have recently upgraded to a D300S from a D90, but keep the D90 as a backup.

D300S and the D90 share plenty of similarities, hence, although it was quite a upgrade to me, I wasn't completely lost.

I am not going to repeat all the positive features of this camera other than to say I agree and love the frame speed, dual memory-card slots, 51 AF points, and many more.

However, I think the major weakness about this camera is actually what many considered to be its strength, which is the Auto Focus ability. As you know, of the 51 AF points in the D300S, 15 of them are "cross-type" focus-point sensor, all locating in the centre, and the remaining 36 are "horizontal-type" focus point sensor spreading on the two sides.

While the 15 cross AF points are fast very accurate, the line AF points aren't, especially if the subject has pattern going the same direction as the line AF points. You will need to tilt it a bit to get the AF to work/lock in and then move it back. Compare that to the D90, the D90's 11 AF points are much more reassuring.

I give this camera a solid 4.5 stars, and still glad that I made the purchase. However, I wonder why would Nikon want to concentrate all of the cross AF points in the centre, and wonder why the D90 appears to have a faster and more accurate AF points.

"Great Value for the Price" 2009-12-03
By R. Holen (Minnesota)
This bag works great for my use. It will hold my D90 w/vertical grip, 18-200 zoom, 10-24 zoom, 50mm prime, sb600, two battery chargers and all the filters I normally carry quite easily. It is padded well, with 2 side pockets and a large front pocket and a net pocket in the cover. I like to travel light most of the time, so I never usually fill the bag with everything. The neck strap could be a bit more comfortable. For use on the job, I had a waist pack strap made for this bag and like it even more. If you are going to take every lens you have with you, this is probably not the right bag, but for the average user with 2-3 lens it would work great. You might even be able to sneak your lunch in there somewhere.

"A good all round lens" 2009-12-16
By Anthony Loh (NY, USA)
I also own the previous version together with this one. Why two? I have a D90 and a D300S and often go out and take photos together with my wife. We both love the flexibility and versatility of this lense.

This VRII version has the same optical quality as the previous version with the exception of a creep-lock, and it cost a couple hundreds dollar more. Not worth the extra money.

This is a good lens (fast focus, nice build, quiet), but not optically superior (ok in sharpness but not great), and still expensive. However, this is the one I almost always take with me wherever I go, although I will pair it with other lenses (e.g., a Nikkor 35mm f1.8g, Tokina 11-16mm f2.8, Nikkor 60mm f2.8g micro, Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 VC, etc.) depending on what I shoot that day.

If you have the $$$ and need a versatile and flexible super zoom lense, go for this one. Otherwise, a used previous version of this lens is equally good.

I have had the earlier version on my D200 but due to a problem with the focus motor sent it in for repair. At the same time decided to change the D200 for a D300s. Since I could not wait for 6 weeks for the orignal 18-200mm to come back I decided to buy another Nikon 18-200mm lens. I believe this lens to be the most versitile for Nikon DSLR - if I could only have one lens this would be it.

"great all around though a bit lacking" 2009-12-02
By lemonhedo (philadelphia, PA)
This is probably the so called "lens to rule them all" lens from nikon, well not that great, but it could very well substitute for many lens one may potentially have. For starters, this phat barrel can go from 18mm all the way to 200mm (duh*). Though it isn't that much of a fast lens, the aperture is sufficient for almost all daylight activity in the focal range. For people who just got into the dslr system, this is the lens to get.

In my pouch, I have this lens and the 35mm f1.8 prime lens for my portrait shots and night shots. I had not need to switch out the 18-200mm when I go out to take pictures, and that shows how awesome this lens is. Definitely recommended!

 "Very Good Intro Lens" 2009-12-01
By J. Montgomery (Colorado, USA)
I've used this lens and its predecessor extensively and I've been happy with both. They are clear, accurate, and focused. You can find a zillion reviews talking about how awesome this lens. I'm going to highlight the lens' shortcomings. This is not a be all, end all lens. Don't get me wrong, this is my walkaround lens and it stays on my camera 75% of the time. But it's important to know what this lens won't do.

1. Low light. This is a problem that plagues any reasonably priced long-range zoom. If you're going to be doing much shooting indoors, at night, or twilight with this lens, invest in a good quality flash.

2. Bokeh. The majority of the out-of-focus fields look great. However, if you're shooting wide open (low f stop) and there's a lot going on in the background (long grass, trees, etc) some of the finer details can be blurred or occasionally have a weird halo look to them. It's not that big of an issue, but it does happen from time to time.

3. Distortion. Very manageable and hardly noticeable for the most part, but when you shoot things that are obviously supposed to be very straight (buildings, roads, etc)at less than about 50mm there is some pincushioning. This is easily correctable in photoshop.

4. Light falloff. In low-light and long-exposure pictures, you can clearly see some falloff in the corners. Again, hardly a big deal for most photography.

5. Weight. If you're not used to big lenses, this will take some getting used to, especially if you're upgrading from a kit lens.

6. Filters. The 72mm size is getting more popular, but there still aren't nearly as many filters available as some other sizes. There are resizing rings to compensate if you already have some larger rings, or are eyeballing something in particular.

Ok, this was not meant to turn you off of this lens, only to give you a grounded sense of what this lens has to offer. It is a great walkaround lens for everyday use. It is also a great lens for people looking to get their foot in the door with high quality lenses without having spend too much. This won't replace prime lenses, fast lenses, and superzooms. This is a perfect lens to buy if can only afford, or only want one lens. I would still hate to be without this lens. Highly recommended.

"If you have one lens, this is the one" 2009-11-30

The Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 G AF-S ED VR II (they must come up with a better naming system) gets five big stars for convenience. When I hike or travel light, this is the only lens I take. The small size and great zoom range are fantastic.

But lets be clear, the lens has many flaws. It is slow (f 5.6 is SLOW). VR is great for decreasing camera shake, but does nothing to stop the action. The lens has significant chromatic and geometric distortion. The geometric distortion is enough that you will not want to take architectural pictures with this lens (LensFix by Kekus can fix this). At the long end the contrast the color rendering decrease dramatically. The bokeh (the quality of the out of focus rendering) is rather busy and not too nice. When the lens if fully extended it is quite flimsy. The lens hood is not well attached (I am on #3).

All of that said, I am very happy with this lens. I am very glad I have it.
