 "Worth the money" 2009-11-25
By Houston Texan (Houston TX USA)
This is the cheapest Nikkor zoom lens that will get you to 300mm, so is the build quality. The lens feel little cheaper next to my 18-105VR ED lens.

I have shot the Moon with this lens. It came out good with all the fine details of the moon.

But the lens is very slow to focus. I used this lens in an air show. It took lot of time to focus the fast moving jets.

You would need a tripod if you are zooming all the way and the lighting is not enough. Even on cloudy day light, pictures came out blurry when completely zoomed in. I think this will be the issue with all zoom lens without VR.

Auto Focusing is noisy but I can live that.

But its definitely worth every single penny if you can't afford its expensive clone VR.

You will not be disappointed. Picture quality is very good.

By the way, I have Nikon D90. I don't have any issues using this lens.

I'm completely satisfied with the lens despite some shortcomings.

"Nikkor Telephoto on a Budget for Nikon D90" 2009-11-07
By Jonathan Widmann (Northern VA)
I have a Nikon D90 kit with the 18-105 VR lens, and I wanted more telephoto reach for the kids' sports games etc. I found this 70-300 non-VR lens for one hundred twenty five dollars at Adorama dot com, shipping included, and received it two days later--wow. My impression is that it is definitely a budget lens but it does a pretty good job for the price. It appears to be well-constructed and it is fairly light weight as the overall construction is made of nicely molded composite-type plastic, so it is not flimsy. The lens comes with a hood and the telephoto adjustment action of the barrel is just as smooth as my kit lens. This lens does not have its own built-in autofocus motor, nor an aperature adjustment ring. However, the D90 does have its own AF motor, which handles the auto focus and aperature just fine, it is pretty fast and accurate. If your camera is the D5000/3000 or D40/60 which do not have an AF motor, I would recommend you avoid this lens unless you have a lot of time ad skill to manual focus your shots. The lens is definitely much softer than my kit VR lens, and definitely not tack-sharp, especially at 200 to 300 mm range, and it needs bright sunshine outside to operate well. It's really not an indoor-use lens unless you have a high ISO and some serious flash capability. Even though this lens lacks the vibration reduction (VR) feature, it is possible to hand-hold it and get some really good shots even at the far end of the range. However, a tripod or even a monopod provide much better stability for fast action shots. I also added a Tiffen 62mm polarizing filter on this lens and that seems to make the colors better but doesn't help the sharpness, so I would still recommend using a filter with this lens. Overall, I would say that this lens will scratch your itch if you just want really good far reach, but you're willing to sacrafice the extra tack-sharpness of the five hundred plus dollar VR Nikkor lens.

"Not fully functional with Digital SLR cameras" 2009-11-05
By R. Daniels (Frisco, TX, United States)
This lens is described in the product description as an auto-focus that will work on digital SLR cameras. While the lens is technically an "auto-focus lens" it is misleading. If you have a digital SLR camera youR lens has a switch on the side that allows the camera to focus the lens when you press the photo button. This lens does not do that. On a digital SLR camera it is just a manual focus lens. I called the seller and they wanted to argue that the lens was auto-focus but did agree to allow me to return the lens. So while the lens was new and the size specified, my complaint is that the description misleads you into thinking that this is a fully autofocus lens compatible and fully functional on digital SLR cameras such as my Nikon D40 it is not.

"Nikon 70-300mm AF non VR" 2009-09-12
By Justin Durueke (Seattle)
It is a very wonderful lens. I wanted to get the 70-300mm VR but after purchasing this one, I will say I am satisfied and will not be getting the other one. I take so many great pictures with it on my Nikon D5000. I would recommend it to everyone shooting outdoors. It is not the best lens for indoor pictures. The zoom works so well.

♦ 2) Vivitar 52mm UV Glass Filter

♦ 3) Precision Design Deluxe 6 Piece Lens & Digital SLR Cleaning Kit

♦ 4) CapKeeper 2 Lens Cap Strap

This 3.6x zoom features Nikon's VR image stabilization and is perfect for portraits and action. Vibration Reduction reduces the effects of camera shake, allowing hand-held shooting at up to 3 shutter speeds slower than without VR. An ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass element minimizes chromatic aberration, and a compact rod-type Silent Wave Motor (SW) enables ultra-high speed auto focusing with exceptional accuracy and super-quiet operation.

This Vivitar UV Filter is a multi-purpose, fine-weather filter that is designed to optimize your photography experience. UV filters block out unwanted ultraviolet light and prevents the UV "fogging/haze" effect", which can result in inaccurate color and lower the apparent sharpness. This filter is also ideal for protecting your valuable lens from scratches and dust, and it can be kept on the lens at all times. Perfect for digital, video and photo.

Keep your lens cap securely attached to your lens with the convenient, simple-to-use CapKeeper. Never lose a lens cap again!

 "Love the lens" 2009-11-27
By Visaharaja Ravindar
I bought this item after reviewing previous ratings and a LOT of research as I was concerned about the budget. Initially my plan was to buy the 70-300 mm Non VR lens. It was within my budget and was thinking 300mm would help me to cover more distance.

But after reading reviews and comparisons I chose 55-200mm VR.

Reasons:

1. VR helps me a lot as I am interested in taking Sunset/Sunrise and do not have a dedicated external flash.

2.100mm doesn't make big difference. Read a quote by Ansel Adams "Best wide-angle lens? 'Two steps backward' and 'look for the ah-ha'" mentioned in Kenrockwell page.

So thought, for 300mm I need to move forward few steps, ha ha.

3. Have Nikon D40 so wanted a lens which works in AF mode. 70-300mm doesn't.

So bought in Oct, love this and its awesome. Except the add-ons, they are not very good quality materials. But this deal is cheaper than the lens in other sites.

Thanks for people who wrote the reviews....

BTW, the lens makes some noises while auto focusing and (releasing shutter if VR is on), and its normal.

 "No Brainer Sports Action" 2009-11-18
By Shop Girl
I bought this lens based on several recommendations about the quality of the images you can get with it. In particular, the lightness of the lens is a major factor. I recently bought the Nikon D90 I use this lens on and the combination is very easy to hold for long periods and to shoot sports with. All the pictures I took with reasonable light levels were super sharp. I used it to shoot pictures of my grandson playing football and even caught a sequence of shots where I zoomed between shots (1 second apart or so) as he scored almost right in front of me. All the shots at 200mm were excellent after discounting my sometimes poor selection of where to point the lens. The VR clearly was working as I was hand-holding for all my shots,

"A good all round lens" 2009-12-16
By Anthony Loh (NY, USA)
I also own the previous version together with this one. Why two? I have a D90 and a D300S and often go out and take photos together with my wife. We both love the flexibility and versatility of this lense.

This VRII version has the same optical quality as the previous version with the exception of a creep-lock, and it cost a couple hundreds dollar more. Not worth the extra money.

This is a good lens (fast focus, nice build, quiet), but not optically superior (ok in sharpness but not great), and still expensive. However, this is the one I almost always take with me wherever I go, although I will pair it with other lenses (e.g., a Nikkor 35mm f1.8g, Tokina 11-16mm f2.8, Nikkor 60mm f2.8g micro, Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 VC, etc.) depending on what I shoot that day.

If you have the $$$ and need a versatile and flexible super zoom lense, go for this one. Otherwise, a used previous version of this lens is equally good.

I have had the earlier version on my D200 but due to a problem with the focus motor sent it in for repair. At the same time decided to change the D200 for a D300s. Since I could not wait for 6 weeks for the orignal 18-200mm to come back I decided to buy another Nikon 18-200mm lens. I believe this lens to be the most versitile for Nikon DSLR - if I could only have one lens this would be it.

"great all around though a bit lacking" 2009-12-02
By lemonhedo (philadelphia, PA)
This is probably the so called "lens to rule them all" lens from nikon, well not that great, but it could very well substitute for many lens one may potentially have. For starters, this phat barrel can go from 18mm all the way to 200mm (duh*). Though it isn't that much of a fast lens, the aperture is sufficient for almost all daylight activity in the focal range. For people who just got into the dslr system, this is the lens to get.

In my pouch, I have this lens and the 35mm f1.8 prime lens for my portrait shots and night shots. I had not need to switch out the 18-200mm when I go out to take pictures, and that shows how awesome this lens is. Definitely recommended!

 "Very Good Intro Lens" 2009-12-01
By J. Montgomery (Colorado, USA)
I've used this lens and its predecessor extensively and I've been happy with both. They are clear, accurate, and focused. You can find a zillion reviews talking about how awesome this lens. I'm going to highlight the lens' shortcomings. This is not a be all, end all lens. Don't get me wrong, this is my walkaround lens and it stays on my camera 75% of the time. But it's important to know what this lens won't do.

1. Low light. This is a problem that plagues any reasonably priced long-range zoom. If you're going to be doing much shooting indoors, at night, or twilight with this lens, invest in a good quality flash.

2. Bokeh. The majority of the out-of-focus fields look great. However, if you're shooting wide open (low f stop) and there's a lot going on in the background (long grass, trees, etc) some of the finer details can be blurred or occasionally have a weird halo look to them. It's not that big of an issue, but it does happen from time to time.

3. Distortion. Very manageable and hardly noticeable for the most part, but when you shoot things that are obviously supposed to be very straight (buildings, roads, etc)at less than about 50mm there is some pincushioning. This is easily correctable in photoshop.

4. Light falloff. In low-light and long-exposure pictures, you can clearly see some falloff in the corners. Again, hardly a big deal for most photography.

5. Weight. If you're not used to big lenses, this will take some getting used to, especially if you're upgrading from a kit lens.

6. Filters. The 72mm size is getting more popular, but there still aren't nearly as many filters available as some other sizes. There are resizing rings to compensate if you already have some larger rings, or are eyeballing something in particular.

Ok, this was not meant to turn you off of this lens, only to give you a grounded sense of what this lens has to offer. It is a great walkaround lens for everyday use. It is also a great lens for people looking to get their foot in the door with high quality lenses without having spend too much. This won't replace prime lenses, fast lenses, and superzooms. This is a perfect lens to buy if can only afford, or only want one lens. I would still hate to be without this lens. Highly recommended.

"If you have one lens, this is the one" 2009-11-30
By David Elliott
The Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 G AF-S ED VR II (they must come up with a better naming system) gets five big stars for convenience. When I hike or travel light, this is the only lens I take. The small size and great zoom range are fantastic.

But lets be clear, the lens has many flaws. It is slow (f 5.6 is SLOW). VR is great for decreasing camera shake, but does nothing to stop the action. The lens has significant chromatic and geometric distortion. The geometric distortion is enough that you will not want to take architectural pictures with this lens (LensFix by Kekus can fix this). At the long end the contrast the color rendering decrease dramatically. The bokeh (the quality of the out of focus rendering) is rather busy and not too nice. When the lens if fully extended it is quite flimsy. The lens hood is not well attached (I am on #3).

All of that said, I am very happy with this lens. I am very glad I have it.

The AF-S VR 70-300 f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED is a high-performance super telephoto zoom lens that has been designed to meet the demands of both digital and 35mm format SLR users. It offers a 4.3x zoom with a range of 70-300mm (105-450mm on a DX Nikon D-SLR) and features ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements that ensure superior optical performance. This lens incorporates Nikon's second-generation vibration reduction system (VR II) that allows flexible hand-held shooting by stabilizing the image to the equivalent extent of using a shutter speed that is four stops faster when compared with a conventional lens (as determined by Nikon performance test). The SWM (Silent Wave Motor) and IF (Internal Focusing) ensure fast and quiet focusing action, and the nine-blade rounded diaphragm makes out-of-focus elements blend smoothly to produce natural-looking, harmonious backgrounds.

This lens has very good value/price ratio and basically it is as good as they wrote everywhere about it. I am also very pleased with amazon service as all the products I ordered so far came as I expected. Just from what I read in other reviews people should be more careful and read product descriptions and not just order based on the image. Also I always buy things flaged as IN STOCK.

I got the lens for my husband for Christmashe last year, has a Nikon D50. It is a great lens, the zoom is great easy to use. Yes is has alittle weith to it but that comes with good construction and stability. I use if for my nwphew's may sports and I don't have to be on the field or against the fence to get close pictures, most I get are from the stands. Mu husband uses it for hunting and brings back some beautiful nature shots. He also takes picures of my butterfly garden and picture of the hummingbirds all come out crip. The zoom is wonderful, no problem with clearity. All in all love the lens.

Pros: great zoom with clear picures

Cons: LITTLE heavy but note enought to cause a problem

"Great lens for the price" 2009-11-25
By SL (Miami, FL)
I just sold my 70-200mm 2.8 VR and decided to get this lens, much cheaper and lighter. I shot about 100 pictures with my D300 and the result is pretty impressive: Handheld with relatively low speed (100-250), stopped down to 8-11, pictures came out really nice, even at 300mm. VR works well. It's no match to the 70-200mm VR on low light but at 1/4 of the price and 1/2 the weight it's a fantastic deal. I only shoot outdoors and don't miss the 2.8 from the previous lens. Maybe not great for pros but excellent for an amateur like me. BTW, needless to say, Amazon rocks !

 "VR Is Amazing" 2009-11-22
By Ethan Anderson (Houston, TX USA)
I have been very skeptical of Nikon and other brands' vibration reduction claims, but finally decided to give it a try with the Nikon 70-300 VR. The lens is well-made, with a solid feel for a plastic lens. The weight of the glass in this lens probably also adds to the feel of the build quality.

The optics in my lens are outstanding (I'm using a full-frame D700). Wide open in bright light and 300mm, it gets a little soft in the edges, but in virtually all other conditions it's sharp and contrasty. I don't have a high-dollar fixed focal length lens to compare, but I think the vast majority of amateur photographers would be happy with the results from this lens. The zoom range is huge, and I've found it works well as a portrait lens in decent lighting. The minimum focus distance is very long, so it's not great for indoor photography in tight spaces, but it's not really designed for use in that environment to begin with.

The VR works wonders. The first time I really tested my lens, I had just finished a pot of coffee before we headed for the dog park. Even with my hands shaking from the large amount of caffeine I had just stupidly ingested, the image in the viewfinder was stable and still. I was able to walk with the camera pressed to my face and still get good photos of my dog racing around the park. Active mode is extremely helpful when taking photos from a moving vehicle. If you are planning a Safari or any other activity that requires photography from a moving truck, this lens is a must.
