"Excellent Portrait / Low Light Lens" 2009-12-04
By G. Witenske
This is an excellent lens for portrait and low light photography. I used it to shoot a cheerleading group at a night stadium game - the portraits of the cheerleaders were sublime!!!

While I am better using my F2.8 70-200mm lens for football action photos, this lens was perfect for closeups and group shots of the cheerleaders.

I hope to use this lens for high school basketball. Can't wait.

Very pleased!!!!

Great contrast, bokeh, and speed! Only wish you didn't have to be 3' from the subject. This lens is a keeper.

"Killer optics & build; but can be tricky to focus" 2009-10-29
By Erik H. (Orange County, CA)
This is a solid performer on any Nikon, although the old-school screw-drive AF system will render it less useful on less compatible models. The depth of field is so narrow at f/1.8, that users will have hard time nailing sharp focus on moving objects if they're limited to manual focus mode (as you would on a D60 or D5000 for instance).

On my D90, this lens is awesome -- razor sharp with professional-looking bokeh. I never liked the built-in flash using my other lens (16-85mm Nikon), but I find that shots taken with my 85mm look totally different -- the bokeh is so rich that the harsh background shadows otherwise captured with lesser lenses just disappear in the blur.

Even with functional AF on my D90, accurate focus tracking can be tricky on moving subjects. I suspect that if this lens was updated to AF-S, it might focus a tad quicker (and not drain my battery so fast). But overall, this is a great lens for the price. Flawless optical quality.

 "my new favorite lens!" 2009-10-20
By Marchelle R. Mosley (Indianapolis)
i really struggled over whether or not to drop the extra $1000 and get the 85 1.4. i decided to save my money for now, and i must say i am really pleased with this lens. it's by far my favorite lens i own, and i have rarely taken it off my camera. the clarity is great, and the colors even seem more vibrant. beautiful DoF, sparkly bokeh, and sharp. a definite must-have for portraits!

"Poor contrast and not sharp with wide open apertures." 2009-06-30
By Sam (USA)
Whenever I try or buy a lens, I perform a simple but fairly objective test on the lens: I photograph a bar code from a glass bottle on a tripod. Why a bar code from a glass bottle? Because the definition of the lines are very sharp.

I photograph the bottle's bar code with the aperture wide open then stop down an f-stop at a time.

With the 85mm 1.8 lens at f1.8 aperture, the contrast is poor and bar code is fuzzy. At around f5.6, the bar code is perfectly sharp and the contrast is excellent.

I've also owned the 85mm 1.4 lens and it's perfectly sharp at 1.4 but it is nearly 3x the price and a lot heavier. All of my $1000+ Nikon lenses are astonishingly sharp wide-open. You do get what you pay for.

I also own the Nikon 50mm 1.4 lens and it too is fuzzy and has poor contrast wide open. Only when the aperture is closed down several stops does one obtain very good sharpness and contrast.

I wish reviewers wouldn't arbitrarily state that a lens is perfectly sharp wide-open without stating how they arrived at that conclusion.

If I could, I'd post my results as proof but Amazon won't allow links and I can't include images.

"Excellent lens - welcome to the world of macro" 2010-02-19
By iamdavinci
I purchased this lens with the Nikon 105mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR Micro-Nikkor Lens due to my love of macro photography. The 60mm produces sharp and crisp images at a 1:1 reproduction ratio which makes the world of macro photography superb. Nikon's exclusive Silent Wave Motor ensures fast, quiet autofocus operation which is great when you are not able to use a tripod. The Nano Crystal Coat and high-performance Nikon Super Integrated Coating delivers superior color reproduction, while substantially reducing ghosting and flare. The rounded nine-blade diaphragm opening makes out-of-focus objects appear more natural which makes your photos appear more "real". If you have a digital darkroom this should spur the creative juices even more as you can take and develop your masterpieces within minutes.

I purchased the 60mm and the 105mm lenses due to the difference in focal lengths - while the 60mm will be used for studio work, the 105mm will be used for nature work. There is some hunting done at close range but it is quick to resolve and bring in the focus. If there is no shot to take it will do nothing until you are at the right distance from your subject. But you should familiarize yourself with the aspects of the lens than you will do fine. The bokeh is beautiful and creamy and it makes your photo feel like a work of art.

Overall well worth the money. Teamed this lens up on a D90 with a Nikon NC - 62mm Filter - for protection. An absolutely beautiful lens.

 "Nikon's 60mm Micro Macro" 2010-02-08
By David Saffir (www.davidsaffir.com)
Just purchased this lens after debating focal length, etc among macro choices. Settled on this one because I use it for more than one purpose - macro of course, but also fine art reproduction. I need the shorter focal length to reduce working distance for large pieces of art.

The new Nano coating is perfect for the newer DSLRs - astonishing contrast and clarity. Very, very sharp and excellent color accuracy. Also lighter than its predecessors.

This can be a great all-around lens, pretty fast at f/2.8, completely flat and sharp to the corners. Highly recommended.

This is a superb optic, Nikon at it's best. Only thing lacking would be the addition of Vibration reduction. So far it is supplanting all my other lenses and is doing everything needed as an all around lens. Very sharp and not overly heavy .Well worth the dollars.

"A great DX/FX Macro for those who need the versatility of a 60mm Macro" 2009-12-16
By S. S. Malhotra (Norwalk, CT)
Pro's:

I really labored over purchasing this lens, as the Nikon 85mm f/3.5G AF-S DX ED VR Micro Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras was announced around the time I had bought this lens.

But I knew I wanted more working distance since I was going to use this lens on my D200 (DX body, so effective focal length 90mm); I also wanted something that would work on my N75 and have the ability to use with a D700/D3/D3x if I so chose to.

A recent Dec 2009 review from Popular Photography also supported my choice, titled "7 Versatile Pieces of Photo Gear":

The 60mm Macro Lens

For tremendous versatility in a single focal length, nothing beats a fast (f/2.8 or faster) 60mm macro lens, especially when you use it on a DSLR with an APS-C-sized sensor. It's tops for both fascinating close-ups and flattering portraits. A macro lens is a must to get in tight on a small object. And if your subject is round (like these cherries), a 60mm can help bring out the shape in ways that longer macros, which flatten the scene, cannot. Even better? Its typical close-focusing distance of 7-9 inches lets you adjust your subject while your eye remains glued to the viewfinder. But with portraits, you want to be farther away. The one here succeeds in part because the photographer's 60mm macro lens, used on her Nikon D200, scaled up to a 90mm equivalent--just about perfect for people pictures.

Regardless, this macro has been a joy to use, and it gives me several stops advantage over the "competing" 85 3.5 VR macro recently released. . .

Quick, silent focus, and excellent gold-stamped "N" construction round out the pluses!

Con's:

Odd length, doesn't really fit well with my small lens cases.

HEAVY for the size. But I like it (some may not).

Some hunting in low light and slow to focus from infinity to close, as expected of a macro though since they are made to be be finely adjusted.

Wish it had VR as I use it as a portrait lens sometimes.

P.S. I also use with the post-processing suiteDxO Optics Pro v5 Standard Edition(D200 + 60mm 2.8). Cleans up my shots and gives me a few-stop advantage in post processing!

Was alittle hesitant on buying a lens via the internet. But did my homework and look at reviews. Boy was I impressed by this lens. Pictures are crisp and clear. I'm no pro, but then again I don't think this is a lens a pro would buy. Couldn't ask for a better value for the money.

By Terence Russell (Glen Rose, Texas)
I received this product as a freebie through another purchase. I have already used several of the items contained in the package although the tabletop tripod is worthless unless you have a inexpensive point and shoot camera. I bought one of these at a retailer for a dollar sometime previously and could not even get it to stand stable with a small camcorder. The lens cleaning equipment and the bulb brush have already come in handy!!!!

got it for free from 47th St., and no additional shipping charges, too. :) Tripod is not very reliable - I feel like the camera might tip over anytime. Of course if you have the smaller ones (I have DSLR), this might actually work better. Haven't tried the cleaning solution yet - it might take some more to convince me to try them on my lenses. :)

 "Outstanding Value" 2010-01-29
By A. Dimalanta (Overland Park, KS / Springfield, MO)
I tend to buy a lot of USED lens filters online in large lots. Most of them are sold "as is" because they are very dirty and covered in grime. This cleaning kit works wonders and has save many, many outwardly looking useless filters! AND I happen to be a perfectionist, so this is a big deal.

There are some tips and tricks to getting a good method going. I find that some multi-coated lenses and filters can only be finished streak-free with the FogKlear cloth, like the Hoya HMC UV(C). Most are fine with the cleaning fluid and the LENS MICROFIBER cloth (the spudz one, the one in the carrying case with the pens is NOT FOR LENSES, and that is where the problems are being had with previous reviews), therefore I tend to start by trying this. If there is some grime or something sticking to the surface I use the LensPen to get this off, working it for about 5 to 10 secs in circular motions. Remember to turn the cap of the pen before taking it off to replenish the black cleaning compound on the tip. Some used lenses and filters are covered in grime from oil from fingerprints and mis-handling but most of these can still be saved, as long as there are not scratches into the surface of the glass, keep repeating the first and second step and you might find the multi-coat is still perfectly intact. If it isn't cleaning anymore because of streaks, then try the FogKlear cloth by breathing lightly on the surface and wiping away.

The rest is pretty self-explainatory. Even the stuff above is mostly in the instructions somewhere. Overall the value can't be beat as far as any cleaning supplies but especially for Nikon Branded products. I really enjoy that the cloths and pen come in a nice little case. I put the spudz cloth on one on the zippers of the case. Recommended.

"Everything you need is included" 2009-10-07
By TedW
Pros:

1. It includes everything to clean your camera.

2. The small case is very convenient.

Cons:

1. It was shipped by USPS which is slower than UPS. Shipping is not free.

2. The Nikon mirofiber cloth is not good for cleaning lens. It will leave small fiber and dust on the lens surface if apply the cleaning fluid. I have to re-clean it with a dry part of the micofiber and the air blower.

3. How to keep the microfiber clean seems a problem, especially after applying the cleaning fluid.

Suggestion:

Also buy some lens cleaning paper if you are serious for your lens.

 "Great Camera" 2009-11-19
By Michael Brown (Mississippi)
This camera is a wonderful product. I have used it for almost a full month now and have not had any issues with it. It takes great pictures and is fairly easy to use. It has many features that I haven't had a chance to explore yet. The battery life is excellent. I have taken hundreds of pictures over the past month and the battery is still full. This particular camera does not have the live LCD screen so if you don't like using the viewfinder, I suggest buying the upgraded model. It also does not have the ability to take video clips. The playback LCD screen is large, though. The shoulder strap is very sturdy and not cheaply made. This is my first Nikon and I am extremely pleased thus far.

"Ok product does it job" 2010-02-06
By Anthony Loh (NY, USA)
This piece of plastic does it's job which is to protect the LCD screen of my dSLR from scratching. However, the quality of this piece of plastic is just so so, it is so easily scratched itself, and it is very expensive. Anyway, since it is much more expensive to replace a scratched LCD than this piece of plastic, I guess it's not even a choice not to have one. The rating based on the review of the product ends here.

This sentence is about the reseller and it has no bearing to the rating above. I bought two of the LCD protector and the reseller of the products charged the S&H twice though both arrive in the same box. So, the reseller advertised a lower price but made up the difference with bogus S&H.

"Essential protection and a way to preserve resale value" 2009-06-13
By J. MACLEAN (Centreville, VA.)
Although this came with my new D300, things happen. I had the original for around 16 months before mine got a crack that was substantial to warrant replacing. Thankfully it was this plastic LCD protector that took the mpact and not the LCD itself. When I think of all the scratches and dings this protector endured, I hate to imagine not having had the protector and seeing all these scratches on my actual LCD. If I didn't have it, just imagine how those permanent marks on my D300's LCD would lower my eventual resale price when I sell this! So just having this is an investment in preserving some sense of resale value in a commodity (DSLR) that depreciates rather quickly. But the bottom line is, I don't want to damage my camera body either as a result of an accident or normal wear and tear. This LCD protector does a great job of protecting the LCD! I love having it! 5 stars!
